We Compared Luggage Warranties. Here’s Why Travel Damage Coverage Changes Everything.

We Compared Luggage Warranties. Here’s Why Travel Damage Coverage Changes Everything.

At Away, we’ve always believed that your luggage should be the last thing you worry about when you’re out in the world. For years, our limited lifetime warranty was the gold standard, giving travelers peace of mind if their product didn’t stand up to our uncompromising manufacturing standards.

But as travel has become more unpredictable, faster and more frequent, we compared luggage warranties, and saw a widening gap between two types of coverage: warranties that cover how a bag was made, and coverage that’s designed for how a bag is impacted by travel. Most luggage warranties focus primarily on manufacturing defects. Away LifetimeCare™ Coverage was designed to support luggage throughout real-world travel. It’s not just a name change; it’s a commitment to keeping your bag in transit for the life of your suitcase.

Here’s how we’re defining the next era of travel protection.

1. What It Means to Go Beyond Manufacturing Defect

Most traditional lifetime warranties were primarily designed to protect against manufacturing defects—essentially focusing only on issues with how the bag was made. By expanding our coverage, we’re providing a clearer, more inclusive definition of what it means to stand behind the product we make and how it performs in the real world.

LifetimeCare™ Coverage provides a more comprehensive approach to functional damage. LifetimeCare™ covers most failures that prevent your bag from doing its job, whether that’s a manufacturing flaw or an overenthusiastic baggage handler. While some brands, like Samsonite, Beis, and July, explicitly exclude transit damage (like airline mishandling) from their warranties—or require a paid upgrade, like Monos—Away’s LifetimeCare™ Coverage includes travel damage protection with every suitcase purchase, for the life of your luggage.

2. Lifetime Support Isn't a Perk, It's the Point

A great warranty should keep your suitcase on the road. Our repair first, replace when needed philosophy is at the heart of LifetimeCare™.

Away continues to provide repair support and cover round trip shipping for the life of your suitcase.

  • Investing in repairability: Away is investing in more sophisticated repairability options to keep your suitcase on the road for years to come.
  • Complimentary in-store repairs: Repairs that can be done in store remain free for the life of your luggage.
  • Shipping support: Away continues to cover round-trip shipping for repairs for the life of your suitcase, while many repair-focused brands—like Travelpro or Briggs & Riley—require customers to pay at least part of the shipping costs, which can add up for large luggage.
  • Durability over disposability: Extending the life of a high-quality suitcase through repair and ongoing support means more journeys, longer product life, and fewer unnecessary replacements.

3. What's Covered & What's Not

There is often a lot of noise in the luggage industry around what is covered, when service fees apply, or whether brands will ultimately repair or replace a damaged bag. We want to be direct: our commitment to you is designed for the long haul, and we believe customers deserve clear, upfront information about how their coverage actually works.

Away LifetimeCare™ does not end after five years—it’s support for the life of your suitcase. For the first five years, repairs are entirely complimentary, and one replacement is offered if we’re unable to repair your bag. After year five, repair support continues for the life of your luggage, and repairs that can be completed in-store remain complimentary. Unlike many brands, round-trip shipping is always on us.

We also offer LifetimeCare Pro, an optional paid upgrade, which extends complimentary repair support to 10 years from purchase and doubles your replacement coverage during that same period. It’s designed for frequent fliers and travelers who expect more miles ahead.

While a reasonable service fee may apply after year five or ten, those costs are always communicated upfront by our team so there are never any surprises.

4. Premium Protection Should Be Baseline

When comparing luggage warranties, it’s important to look closely at what’s included with your purchase. In today’s market, many brands, like Monos, offer more limited coverage that applies only to specific components—such as wheels, locks, and handles—or offer coverage for travel damage through paid upgrades only.

At Away, we believe a premium suitcase should come with premium coverage designed for the realities of modern travel. That’s why support for functional damage—for both manufacturing defects and real-world travel—is included as part of LifetimeCare™ Coverage from day one with every suitcase purchase.

5. We Don't Just Claim Durability, We Measure It

Our suitcases are designed to uncompromising standards and rigorously tested through our proprietary AXT™ Performance Testing method. Before an Away suitcase logs its first mile with you, its design has already endured more than 850 hours of testing to simulate the toughest conditions in global travel.

And we don’t just claim durability—we see it in the data. With 94% of suitcases sold never utilizing a warranty repair or replacement, our goal is simple: to keep you focused on your destination, not your zipper. We build for the realities of the road so you can travel with confidence.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’ve been carrying an Away bag since our first year or you’re just joining the community today, our commitment remains the same: to stand behind every mile.

We aren't just offering a standard warranty; we're offering ongoing support for the life of your suitcase. Travel is unpredictable, but your support shouldn't be.
